Free, ad-free Android word study app by Dana Bell. Anagram, hook, pattern, stem, and word-builder searches with definitions stored locally (no internet required). Supports NWL23, WOW24, CSW24, and more. includes Quizzes (Quick or Cardbox), Word Judge, and Time Clock. Uses the same Cardbox database format as Zyzzyva.

Scrabble3D
Free open-source client (Windows/Mac/Linux) for standard, Superscrabble, and 3D variants with online multiplayer and ratings. Highly configurable lexicon and board settings.
Clubs & Organizations
NASPA (North American Scrabble Players Association)
Governing body for tournament and club Scrabble in the US and Canada. Manages ratings, sanctions events, edits the NWL, and distributes Zyzzyva. Membership required for rated play.
WGPO (Word Game Players Organization)
Player-run alternative to NASPA. Organizes the annual Word Cup championship and regional events with an emphasis on community governance.
COCO (Collins Coalition)
Player-run alternative to NASPA, using the International Scrabble Dictionary, Collins Scrabble Words.
US Scrabble Organizations
Portland has multiple Scrabble communities using different word lists and rule sets. Here’s a quick guide so you know what to expect at each venue.
NWL23 — NASPA Word List 2023
A standard for rated competitive club and tournament play in North America. Used at the Portland Scrabble Club on Tuesday nights.
WOW24 — WGPO Official Words 2024
A freely-licensed word list. 99.7% the same as the NWL list. Trigger warning: biggest difference are some slurs. Used at Lucky Labrador (Sundays) and Soku Sushi (Fridays). Zyzzyva import file available here.
CSW — Collins Scrabble Words
The international lexicon used in WGPO tournaments and competitive play outside North America. Larger than NWL; includes many British and international spellings.
OSPD — Official Scrabble Players Dictionary
The older, widely-known dictionary used at casual and social games. A good starting point for home players.
Word Lookup & Dictionary Checkers
Merriam-Webster Scrabble Finder
Hasbro-licensed checker using the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (NWL). Checks validity, gives definitions, and includes a rack-anagram word finder.
